Finding Gratitude in the Eye of the Storm

Dear Friends,

As we navigate the unpredictable storms of life, both literal and metaphorical, it’s essential to embody a spirit of gratitude. Recently, many of us experienced the turmoil brought by Hurricane Helene. The temporary loss of power, Wi-Fi, access to food, fuel, and clean water tested our patience and resilience. Yet, through these moments of struggle, we have the opportunity to reflect on the profound importance of cultivating inner peace and gratitude amid the storm.

Scripture reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” This verse doesn’t just encourage us to be thankful during the pleasant times but insists that we appreciate God’s presence even in our most challenging moments. Can we find a reason to be grateful while waiting in line for gas or figuring out how to cope without our daily comforts? Yes!

In the midst of chaos, I am reminded of the powerful words found in Isaiah 26:3: “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast because they trust in you.” Trust is the cornerstone of peace. When we press our worries into God’s hands and focus on His promises, we can find a calm center even amidst the storm. This doesn’t mean all our troubles will vanish, but it does let us navigate them with a sense of serenity that’s rooted in faith.

Furthermore, I want to reflect on the heart of gratitude. 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 encourages us, “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Gratitude is a transformative practice that shifts our perspective. Even in the darkest moments, when we take time to look for the good—whether it’s a small act of kindness, a moment of beauty, or simply the breath we take—we begin to cultivate joy in our hearts.

I invite you to consider the storms in your own life and how they have shaped you. What have you learned during these times? Perhaps you’ve realized the importance of community, the strength of family ties, or even the power of your own resilience. Often, it’s in the struggle that we uncover hidden strengths and blessings that we may have overlooked in easier times.

During Hurricane Helene, many faced long lines at gas stations and shortages of food and water. Yet, in these struggles, we witnessed incredible acts of kindness. Neighbors came together to share resources, offer help, and extend support to one another. In Philippians 4:6-7, we are reminded not to be anxious about anything but to turn our worries into prayers, where we will find “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding.” Let’s hold on to that peace as we express our gratitude for the small blessings around us—the warmth of community, the strength to endure, and the small moments of clarity amid chaos.

In our prayers, let us include gratitude for the lessons learned, the strength gained, and the bonds deepened. Let’s remember that every storm, regardless of how fierce, has the potential to lead us back to our center—our faith, our community, and our sense of purpose.

As we work towards recovery, let us also prepare ourselves better for future storms. Here are some essential disaster preparedness tips to consider:

  1. Create a Family Emergency Plan: Discuss where you will go and what you will do in the event of an emergency. Choose a meeting place and keep important contact information readily available.

  2. Build an Emergency Supply Kit: This should include enough water (one gallon per person per day), non-perishable food, a first aid kit, a flashlight, batteries, and any necessary medications.

  3. Secure Important Documents: Keep copies of important documents (like identification, insurance papers, and medical records) in a waterproof container and accessible.

  4. Know Your Evacuation Routes: Familiarize yourself with the nearest shelters and have a plan for evacuating your home if necessary.

  5. Stay Informed: Sign up for alerts from local government and weather agencies. Keeping track of forecasts will help you make informed decisions.

  6. Check on Your Neighbors: Community support is vital during disasters. Make an effort to connect with those around you, especially the elderly and families with young children, to see how you can help one another.

Thank you for being a part of this journey together. I encourage each of you to take a few moments each day to reflect on what you are grateful for, even in the midst of challenges. Let’s continue to uplift one another, share our stories, and find peace in our collective strength.

Wishing you peace and abundant gratitude,

Christalyn Deloach
