Power in Peace Part 3: Authority Without Strain
Dear Family,
Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been learning how to slow our inner world down — not so life stops happening, but so we stop carrying it in ways that were never meant for us. We’ve been talking about the kind of peace that holds steady even when life doesn’t behave, and the kind of strength that doesn’t come from controlling everything around us, but from governing what’s happening within us. And once the heart is steadied and power learns restraint, a deeper question naturally rises:
What does authority look like when it no longer strains the soul?
That’s where we are today.
When Doing the “Right Thing” Still Feels Heavy
Let’s be honest for a moment.
A lot of people are doing good things
faithful things
necessary things
but doing them tired.
Tired parents.
Tired leaders.
Tired people holding everything together with sheer willpower.
And somewhere along the way, exhaustion got spiritualized.
Burnout started sounding like responsibility.
Over-functioning started looking like maturity.
Carrying everything alone became proof of love.
But here’s the gentle truth we don’t hear often enough:
If authority is from GOD,
it should sustain you not slowly drain you.
Matthew 11:28–30
Jesus doesn’t invite people to try harder.
He invites them to come closer.
“Come unto me…”
before
“Take my yoke…”
Rest comes before responsibility.
And notice something important
a yoke was never designed for one person.
His authority was never meant to be shouldered alone.
So if the work is crushing you,
it doesn’t mean you’re weak.
It may mean something is misaligned.
When Strain Is a Signal, Not a Failure
Isaiah 30:15
“In returning and rest shall ye be saved;
in quietness and confidence shall be your strength…”
Strain often shows up when:
we’re afraid to let go
we feel pressure to prove our worth
our identity becomes tied to performance
we don’t trust things to hold without us
Strain isn’t a character flaw.
It’s information.
It tells us where we may be carrying more than we were assigned.
Webster’s 1828 Dictionary
Sometimes peace comes simply from understanding.
So let’s slow down and define what we’re really talking about:
Authority
“Legal power; right to command or act.”
Authority is granted, not forced.
Strain
“Exertion beyond natural power; excessive effort.”
Strain comes from carrying what exceeds your measure.
Rest
“Cessation from labor; freedom from agitation or toil.”
Biblical rest restores function it doesn’t avoid purpose.
Yoke
“That which joins; a bond by which labor is shared.”
Authority works best when it’s shared with GOD, not hoarded.
Responsibility vs. Overreach
There’s a difference and many of us were never taught it.
Responsibility
aligns with capacity
allows margin
invites help
produces fruit
Overreach
is fueled by fear
resists delegation
ignores limits
produces exhaustion
GOD never asked you to be everything.
Only faithful with what is yours.
This isn’t abstract.
It shows up in ordinary places:
In leadership
Leading without rescuing.
Letting systems work instead of compensating constantly.
In parenting
Guiding without micromanaging.
Allowing growth instead of control.
In faith
Serving without burnout.
Obedience without self-erasure.
In yourself
Saying no without guilt.
Resting without explaining.
Authority doesn’t disappear when you rest.
It becomes clearer.
A Gentle Question for the Heart
No pressure. Just honesty.
Where am I carrying weight I was never assigned?
What would change if I trusted GOD to hold what I release?
Sometimes the bravest act of faith
is letting something go unfinished.
A Small Practice for This Week
Release One Load
Choose one thing to:
delegate
delay
release
or rest from
Not forever.
Just long enough to breathe.
Peace doesn’t remove authority.
It clarifies it.
In Conclusion
Authority that comes from GOD:
doesn’t rush
doesn’t strain
doesn’t demand proof
It rests in alignment.
You don’t lose influence by resting.
You regain clarity.
And maybe that’s what peace is teaching us:
That strength was never meant to feel like drowning.
That leadership can feel like steadiness.
That authority, in Heaven’s hands, still comes with gentleness.
With love,
Christalyn 🤍
