The Gift of Rest: Reconnecting with Ourselves
Dear Friends,
I hope this message finds you well. I want to take a moment to sincerely apologize for taking a week off from our newsletter. It was a needed pause, a time to step back, breathe, and reflect. In a world that often pushes us to hustle constantly, I realized the importance of taking time for ourselves—a lesson I believe is crucial for all of us.
The Necessity of Self-Care
When we are depleted—physically, emotionally, or spiritually—we are no good to ourselves or to others. As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” It’s essential to fill our own cups first. Jesus exemplified this by often retreating to solitary places to pray and recharge. “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed” (Luke 5:16, NIV).
This week away allowed me to recognize that in prioritizing self-care, I am not just caring for myself but also enhancing my capacity to serve others. Just as Jesus took time away from the crowds to connect with the Father, we too must carve out moments of solitude to reconnect with our inner selves and our Creator.
Creating a Sustainable Self-Care Routine
In our busy lives, establishing a self-care routine is vital. Here are a few simple steps to consider:
Schedule Downtime: Just as we schedule meetings and commitments, we must prioritize time for ourselves. This could be a quiet morning with a cup of tea, a nature walk, or simply an hour with a good book.
Unplug from Technology: Disconnecting from the constant buzz of notifications allows us to reconnect with our thoughts and feelings. As Psalm 46:10 reminds us, “Be still, and know that I am God.” In stillness, we discover clarity and peace.
Engage in Activities That Nourish Your Soul: Whether it’s journaling, painting, cooking, or gardening, find activities that rejuvenate you. These moments of expression can be incredibly healing.
Practice Gratitude: Taking time to reflect on what you are grateful for can shift your focus and uplift your spirit. “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18, ESV).
The Importance of Disconnecting
Taking time to disconnect from the noise of the world allows us to hear our inner voice—the voice of God speaking to our hearts. In this often-chaotic environment, where distractions abound, it’s easy to lose sight of our true selves. But by stepping back, we create space to listen, reflect, and recharge.
As you take your own moments for self-care, I encourage you to embrace the stillness and silence. God often speaks in the quiet moments. “The LORD was not in the wind,” says 1 Kings 19:11-12, “and after the wind, an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake, a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire. And after the fire, the sound of a low whisper.”
In Conclusion
Thank you for your understanding during my brief absence. I am back, refreshed and ready to share inspiration and encouragement with you all. Remember, taking time for yourself is not indulgent; it’s necessary. Together, let’s prioritize self-care, allowing us to serve others more wholly and harmoniously.
May you find moments of rest and connection in your own journey.
In His Grace,
Christalyn Deloach
